Seven great ways to change your mood

At one point or another in life, all of us had days when we have felt down and out. On days like this, you desire to be in a better state of mind, but may not know how to accomplish this. Does this sound like something that you have experienced?

At times, we get stuck in our own emotional dumps and simply forget how easy it is to feel happier. I am going to discuss seven ways to assist in elevating your mood; some of these suggestions may even surprise you.

1. Go for a walk

Going for a daily walk is one of the best forms of exercise, which to most people is common knowledge. Walking is especially beneficial to you when you are feeling down; it will help improve your mood and make you feel better. If possible, I suggest taking a walk through a natural environment such as the woods, or a park.

Pick somewhere that has plants and birds. Listening to birds chirp is a soothing sound that helps with the desired change of your mood. As for the plants, there are different shades of greenery to look at and the color green is known to be a relaxing color. Imagine in your mind a setting that relaxes you and make it real by taking a stroll, you will be amazed at how this helps to relax you and make you happy.

2. Listen to music

For a large number of people, music has a huge effect on a person’s state of mind and can be effective within moments. Go to the garage, or the storage room where you keep all of your CDs, records, or tapes, and dig out some music that you haven’t listened to in ages; turn your radio to something that you have never listened to before or your favorite radio station. Music brings back memories for people and this can help switch your mood from sad to happy.

3. Open yourself to discovering something new.

Visit your local library or browse through a magazine rack at your local grocery store. There is an immense variety of different types of magazines that surround all types of interests, pick up a magazine that you wouldn’t normally read as you may discover something wonderful.

4. Find something to laugh at.

Laughter is the absolute best way to improve your mood and lift your spirits. I enjoy being around other people that can make me laugh; a good sense of humor goes along way when you are feeling down and out. Another suggestion is to find a book that is humorous or watch a comedy. Find whatever it is that makes you laugh, and do it!

5. Simple breathing meditation

Breathing meditation is one method that I really enjoy using to help me when I am not in a peaceful or good mood. I can do this exercise at work, home, in the passenger seat of my car; it can be done anywhere. You will want to make sure that you are sitting down comfortably with your back straightened.

Close your eyes and concentrate on the flow of air that is going in and out of your nostrils. This can be done within 10-15 minutes and it does wonders for your state of mind. You will be pleasantly surprised at how relaxed you feel afterwards.

6. Doodling for the fun of it.

Do you remember when you were young and used to doodle for hours? Kids love to draw silly little pictures and color with crayons or markers. Drawing and coloring are not just for kids and artists, anyone can do this. All you need are some pens, pencils, colored pencils, markers, or crayons to draw and color for the fun of it. You will be surprised at the shift in your state of mind.

7. Think of others less fortunate.

There are people in the world that are less fortunate than you, and focusing on the needs that these people have will help with your mood as well. The fact that you are reading this article suggests that you are probably better off than most people.

Being able to access the internet and being able to read means that you have an advantage over a lot of people in the world. At times, this may be hard to fathom, but allow your compassion to grow for others. Focusing on helping others will have an effect on your mood as it takes the concentration off of yourself and places it onto others.

The above mentioned are all pretty simple, there is nothing profound or life changing about these tips; however, when you need a quick pick me up, these may be just the things that you need. Placing simple ideas, methods, tools and techniques into action will help you achieve change quicker and easier.

You are right, if we think of those that are more unfortunate than us, it is a shame to have to look at things that way but it is so true. great hub, glad to be your fan !
