A Quick Guide on How to Maximize the Space in Your Garage
62
If you are like many homeowners, you probably use your garage area as an extended storage area for seasonal items such as winter coats, Christmas decorations or decorations for other holidays. Perhaps you have your children’s old clothing and accessories such as a bassinet or a crib that has been outgrown.
More often than not, the garage ends up becoming cluttered and a chaotic mess. I have compiled some ideas and tips to help you make the most out of the potential storage space that you garage has to offer and to help you get organized.
The first step to complete in organizing your garage is to carefully decide what exactly needs to be stored. I suggest that you sort through your things in the garage and decide what you want to keep and what you can get rid of. You can even turn this into a family activity which can be done over the weekend! For everything that you want to get rid of, consider having a garage sale or a yard sale. This is a great way to earn some extra money while getting rid of items that you have no use for anymore.
After you have decided on which items are going to stay and which are going to go, pick out specific items to be placed in storage cabinets. Storage cabinets come in a variety of materials which include wood, metal and plastic. The cabinets are available in many different sizes and styles which allows you to create a custom look.
You have the option to choose units which are free standing or that can be mounted on the wall. If you have small children in the household, you can opt to store hazardous liquids such as chemicals and pesticides inside of storage cabinets that can be closed and locked.
If you have a smaller sized garage, you can opt to purchase wall shelves instead of storage cabinets to help organize your space. You can make your own shelves from plywood purchased from the local hardware store or simply purchase pre-made wooden or metal shelves. Don’t forget about the ceiling of the garage as an area for garage organization. The great thing about this type of storage is that it will free up floor space while hiding the items from view.
In addition to shelving units for the walls of the garage, you can purchase hooks to attach to the garage walls. The hooks can be used to hang larger tools such as rakes, shovels, bicycles and brooms. For smaller tools and baskets to put miscellaneous items in, try installing a few pegboards on the walls of the garage.
Are you an active gardener? Well, there are some great storage units that have been specialized to contain gardening tools in one convenient location. This will help you make sure that all of the items for gardening are kept together in one location for easy access. When your family members need to use this equipment, they will know exactly where to find them.
As you begin the task of organizing your garage, focus your efforts on storing items that are frequently used in convenient places. A well organized garage should not only look good, but it should also make your life easier by allowing you to find what you need in the garage quickly. Remember, the more organized you are, the calmer you will be!
